Why SynthLeaf
It All Started with a Strawberry
Between school and work, our co-founder Robert Mackey wanted to grow strawberries but had little time and only his room to grow them in. So, he built a simple prototype: a plastic shell, a basic light, and plenty of room for improvement. It could barely grow the strawberries he wanted, but it gave us a place to start.
That first attempt brought a bigger challenge into focus: how do you make gardening fit into a busy life and a small space?
That’s where SynthLeaf began. We’re exploring how intentional engineering and automation can make growing at home simpler and more approachable. Whether you’re short on space, pressed for time, or just getting started, we believe there should be room in your life to grow something.

At SynthLeaf we believe the best form of education is action; and because of that we’ve built the SynthLeaf Youth Education Foundation, or SLYEF. SLYEF provides opportunities for young professionals to get real world experience through our internship programs and other youth education events.
